You would think, now that I'm home, I would actually have time to update the blog...I thought wrong...been home a grand total of 3 days since Thursday last week...one day, then it was off to Jakarta...which wasn't as bad as some of the travel warnings suggested...I mean, alright, they found a dud grenade at the Hilton, but we drove past there a couple of times..."there's nothing to fear but fear itself", as Franklin D. Roosevelt once said (I know this because my team lost the trivia at the pub cos no one knew who said it then...)...but anyway, Jakarta...nice enough place...will have to return soon...feel more at home there, and strangely, it felt alot different...one of the differences was the traffic...one word: amazing. How they can fit 5-7 cars abreast on a 3-lane road still baffles me...and the utter disregard to traffic rules and common things, such as stopping to give way at roundabouts, traffic lights, crossings etc...freaky...good food (things I grew up with - my old maid's working for my aunty, who we stayed with), good company (family), bad bugs (food poisoning)...and the cost of clubs!!! Alright, US$12 isn't bad as a cover charge, but US$12.50 for a SMALL Jack and Coke? Gotta be kidding me right? Going back to the pub, no dance clibs for me...it was cool that Steph (my cuz) was invited to a birthday party at this club thing, so we walked on the VIP side of the rope and they just had to pay for my cover charge...liked the way they served their shots too - test tubes, and the pitchers of drinks - conical flasks...interesting, if a bit on the expensive side...had one drink, then Steph just kept passing on hers...four drinks, an Illusion, B52 and 2 Screwdrivers, and she was sloshed...I was just starting the night! Got to bring her for some Pub Grub if she comes to Bathurst...she's allergic to vodka, so no vodka, lime and soda for her...love that drink though, just have to get her Cougar and Cola all night then...got lots of stuff, too much I think...got a reject suit for about US$50, only thing wrong with it was that one of the pockets was sealed shut by accident, so all I've got to do is cut it open...wasn't robbed, which was good I guess...
Got to be careful what I say here now, I think my sister's found out about this site...
My back is killing me...slept one night wrongly, and your back gets thrown out...wish they had chiropractors here...
HSC results are out...got my marks, but I can't get to my UAI cos I've forgotten the PIN number...smart...so, when it's a bit lighter, I've got to go call UAC and -hopefully-, they'll issue me a new PIN...second one too...going to cost a fortune from here...
Refused to help with any of the church decorations this year...especially the tree...dad and me used to do that, set it all up...not anywhere near there...some understand, some say I'm lazy...bugger them...oh, mum's having a war with some of the ladies, should be fun to watch the fireworks...(mean mean mean, bad Nick...)
Can't think of anything else to write for now...apart from that I'm home safe and sound, it's 24 December, and it's very, very different without dad...of course...
Who Is The Black Chinaman?

- Saving someone's life is like falling in love. The best drug in the world. For days, sometimes weeks afterwards, you walk the streets, making infinite whatever you see. Once, for a few weeks, I couldn't feel the earth - everything I touched became lighter. Horns played in my shoes. Flowers fell from my pockets. You wonder if you've become immortal, as if you've saved your own life as well. God has passed through you. Why deny it, that for a moment there - why deny that for a moment there, God was you? I realised that my training was useful in less than ten percent of the calls, and saving lives was rarer than that. After a while, I grew to understand that my role was less about saving lives than about bearing witness. I was a grief mop. It was enough that I simply turned up. Living and working back in Brunei, after a 14 year absence... Also known as: Brunei, NASA, Bruise-Eye, Bru, Cheesecake, Nick, BruNick, BruMedNick, Two Step etc etc etc
