Who Is The Black Chinaman?

Saving someone's life is like falling in love. The best drug in the world. For days, sometimes weeks afterwards, you walk the streets, making infinite whatever you see. Once, for a few weeks, I couldn't feel the earth - everything I touched became lighter. Horns played in my shoes. Flowers fell from my pockets. You wonder if you've become immortal, as if you've saved your own life as well. God has passed through you. Why deny it, that for a moment there - why deny that for a moment there, God was you? I realised that my training was useful in less than ten percent of the calls, and saving lives was rarer than that. After a while, I grew to understand that my role was less about saving lives than about bearing witness. I was a grief mop. It was enough that I simply turned up. Living and working back in Brunei, after a 14 year absence... Also known as: Brunei, NASA, Bruise-Eye, Bru, Cheesecake, Nick, BruNick, BruMedNick, Two Step etc etc etc

Well, ANZAC Day is over once again...just staying in Chris' place...managed to get my pic in the papers...uh oh...but I'll start in the beginning...

After the last post, I stayed around in Syd until about 0300, nothing interesting...missed the last train to Wenty, so I had to wait until the 0400 train to Parramatta...which is about 5 km away from Wenty...but yea, got on the 0400 express, then walked back home...got in at about 0530...then went to sleep...woke up at 1000, and packed up, got to the station in time and just sat around talking to this French evangelical fella...he asked what I was (religion wise), told him I was a Catholic, and commented that we were in the same company, but only different department...it was an interesting way of saying it I guess...but anyway, talked to this bunch of little kiddos that were asking me questions and stuff...then this couple from Wentworth Falls, guy was in the army a long time ago, and we were just talking about his times in the Signals...in the end, I think I met 10 new people...it was well worth it though...

Got into Bathurst, and just did what I had to do at the SQN building, talked to Charlie about the Ball, and it looks alright so far...Saturday was interesting...Friday was only a quiet one...getting ready for ANZAC, Jonsey and me decided to do our usual polish and iron of uniform bits and pieces, and with an offer for "2 for $15" for bottles of schnapps, why not? I got absoloutly sloshed...and I reaked at the Dawn Service; Ledgard commented that I looked a bit rough (I haven't shaved yet) and aparently I smelt like gin...lots of...only drank melon schnapps, and skulled most of the bottle of butterscotch just before bed...it was interesting...

Anyway, ANZAC...Dawn was chilly, about 250 people there, but some bastards just stuffed it up, utter disrespect...someone nearly had a fight up the street, and these bozos walking down started shouting "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" (luckly) just before The Last Post...but yea, it managed to get a write up in the papers (more on that later)...breakfast was the usual, enough to fill you up with...Rockley was good too, didn't snow or have any fog, but it was still cold...the Main was excellent...we wern't out of step (for most of it) because we got The Scot's Pipes and Drums to march away from us, so they didn't stuff up our marching...but they managed to stuff up the parade by stopping in the middle of the street and making everyone else marching around them...Cookie gave a good speech, and yea, the Main was good...Cains, War Graves and Retreat were all good too...well worth it...

Today? Well, good sleep in, then cooked some caramel popcorn, went bowling, and just sitting here now...good day...

On Friday night though, I could have sworn those were the biggest single pieces of steak I've ever seen...needed it's own plate to keep it there, and it was still overhanging...and it was a T-bone too...HUGE...lovely cooked by the equally lovely Mrs Jones...thanks muchly...

Better get to sleep...got things to worry about for later...school for one...ARGH!!!
